“Less Common Respiratory Conditions”

Though not a marketing campaign per se, Mark Miller’s editorial illustration Turberculosis, decorated the cover of the American Academy of Family Physicians’ (AAFP) monthly publication, FP Essentials, in March 2021. Entitled “Less Common Respiratory Conditions,” issue 502 addressed occupational lung diseases, sarcoidosis, fungal respiratory infections, as well as pulmonary tuberculosis, in an effort to fulfill one of AAFP’s missions of continuing medical education.

The task of the medical editorial artist is to summarize a given topic in a manner which is creative, eye-catching, and medically accurate, while not being too graphic or didactic. To begin, the artist must understand as much as possible about the subject from the provided manuscript and other reputable sources. For this illustration, Miller started with simple doodle sketches with the final elements created with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, plus Pixologic ZBrush for 3D elements. The final composition was made in Photoshop.
