My Odyssey: Anyone who’s ever met me knows I rant and rave about the state I grew up in—Rhode Island. An idyllic little slice of the northeast, smallest state in the nation (yes state, not island) and best kept secret. You can’t drive more than 10 miles without catching a glimpse of the ocean (the state has over 400 miles of coastline, which is the basis of its epithet: the Ocean State). And while I currently live in New York City, my sweet seaside haven is the place I return to the most.
My Recommendation: Could it be the quiet, sandy beaches conspicuously free of boardwalks and built-up commercial carnivals? The late sunsets that paint the sky and sea below it a glowing scarlet? The fresh seafood that’s spoiled me so rotten I rarely dare to order fish at all in any other state? There’s a quiet, cynical part of me that hesitates to share all the wonders of Rhode Island with the world for fear that their foot traffic will clog the quiet streets of my hometown. But if you’re looking for beautiful beaches, succulent seafood, music festivals that will change your life, and small-town family-owned restaurants and businesses lining every Main Street you stumble upon instead of large commercial chains—you might want to consider visiting Rhode Island.
