Pharmacy Alerts in the ePrescribing Workflow (OptimizeRx)

Aimed at enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of specialty prescribing, OptimizeRx launched Pharmacy Alerts in 2022 which are notifications in the ePrescribing workflow at the point of care. These alerts create awareness of a brand’s limited pharmacy network at a critical point when a physician is prescribing a specialty medication and provide quicker access for physicians to select an appropriate pharmacy. This in-workflow technology helps reduce abandonment and accelerates access to therapy for specialty medications by ensuring prescriptions are routed to the correct pharmacy at the point of prescribing.

The timing of Pharmacy Alerts is key—notifications happen right when the prescriber is determining where to send a prescription. Physicians access critical brand information at the exact moment they need it, resulting in a change in prescribing behavior and a drastic reduction in prescriptions being sent to out of network pharmacies unable to dispense a medication.

The results speak for themselves. For one specialty brand that treats a symptom of a neurological disorder, this lack of awareness caused 33% of the brands prescriptions to be sent to pharmacies outside of their limited network, creating increased abandonment and delays in therapy initiation. Once OptimizeRx pharmacy alerts were deployed, out of network prescribing dropped from 33% to 4%, a dramatic improvement. Another specialty medication used to treat a chronic inflammatory condition had only 69% of its prescriptions reaching the specialty pharmacy network prior to Pharmacy Alerts, but afterwards, the brand observed a 27% increase in prescriptions being routed to the three pharmacies within the brand’s limited distribution network.
