Furthering the Mission of COVID-19 Relief
John Hennessy truly believes in “walking the walk” when it comes to furthering COVID-19 research. He volunteered to be one of 30,000 participants in Moderna’s Phase 3 COVE study of its mRNA-1273 vaccine, receiving his first two doses in August 2020 and September 2020, respectively.
But his unwavering belief in science and furthering the mission of COVID-19 relief didn’t end there. He volunteered at multiple mass vaccination events at the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, KS and the Concord Fortress of Hope Church in Kansas City, MO. And during the delta surge of COVID-19 in October 2021, John was deployed to Mississippi by FEMA to help coordinate volunteers for vaccination initiatives and at monoclonal antibody treatment clinics. Through his volunteer service, John helped ensure that Mississippi hospitals and communities were well positioned to care for residents and patients.
But philanthropic work like this is nothing new to John. For over a dozen years, he has served as the Vice President on the Board of Directors of the Young Survival Coalition (YSC), which focuses on the needs of women diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 40.
“Over the last 13 years John has demonstrated his commitment to helping tens of thousands of young adults affected by cancer by always going above the call of duty to help,” says Jennifer Merschdorf, CEO, YSC. “He believes deeply in using his skills and talents to help improve someone else’s life. He has volunteered countless hours to ensure that no young adult affected by breast cancer is alone, and for that, we will forever be thankful.”
Beyond that, John is a volunteer with the Kansas City Physical Activity Plan, which is coordinated by “Weighing In,” a program under the Center for Children’s Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition sponsored by Children’s Mercy Kansas City. This program seeks to align community programs to promote healthy lifestyle for youth in the Kansas City region. He also currently sits on the advisory board for ReVital Oncology Rehabilitation Services, a service line of Select Medical, to help ReVital leadership develop programs and broaden access to rehabilitative services for cancer patients around the country.
