Z-Medica Announces QuikClot(R) Products Approved in California

WALLINGFORD, Conn., April 1, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — via PRWEB – Z-Medica®, LLC, a leading developer and marketer of hemostatic devices, announced today that the company’s QuikClot Combat Gauze® LE and QuikClot® EMS products, have been approved by the State of California Emergency Medical Services Authority (EMS Authority) for use in prehospital settings by all public safety first aid providers, effective April 1, 2015.

The EMS Authority is responsible for recommending and approving regulations and basic scope of practice for all of the state’s Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs), Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs) and Paramedics. Additionally, the EMS Authority sets medical training standards and authorized skills for all public safety personnel through regulations.

The new California Public Safety First Aid and CPR regulations require training and allow the use of additional hemorrhage control modalities, including approved hemostatic dressings, by all public safety first aid providers. These regulations go into effect April 1, 2015.

“We know that uncontrolled hemorrhage is the most preventable cause of death in the combat and tactical environment,” said Dan Smiley, chief deputy director of the California Emergency Medical Services Authority. “Having all public safety personnel trained and equipped with the proper tools, including tourniquets, emergency bandages, and hemostatic dressings, provides bleeding victims a much better chance surviving transport to the hospital where they can then receive definitive trauma care. First on scene public safety providers can now stop major bleeding.”

The approval for the use of hemostatic dressings came after an extensive review by the state’s California Tactical EMS Advisory Committee (also known as the Whitman Committee), EMS medical directors and local EMS agencies.

“Having QuikClot available throughout the State of California is a great step towards ensuring the best life-saving technologies are being used,” says Stephen J. Fanning, President and CEO of Z-Medica.
