Southern Hills Hospital Piloting Discomfort Management Diversion Technology

LAS VEGAS, Nov. 13, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Using cutting edge technology and continued high quality nursing care, patients of the Southern Hills Hospital emergency room and orthopedic unit now have the ability to utilize the latest technology in discomfort management. The technology is called AccendoWave, a new program that wirelessly listens to a patient’s brain waves to help them feel more comfortable and express their feelings of discomfort during their hospital stay. Southern Hills Hospital is conducting a six-month pilot through April 2016.

“Southern Hills Hospital actively seeks to enhance our patient experience by using the most advanced technology to deliver the highest quality of care,” said Adam Rudd, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Southern Hills Hospital. “We are proud to be the first and only hospital in Nevada to offer this program free to our patients to improve their discomfort management.”

The patient wears a headband and earbuds that interact and communicate with the handheld tablet all connected by AT &T. AccendoWave detects, monitors and reports discomfort through proprietary wireless computing technology embedded in an electroencephalography (EEG) system. The discomfort is then tracked to see how a patient is feeling. To help distract patients from discomfort, a wide variety of diversionary video and audio content is available. The technology will provide a data point about the patient’s pain or discomfort that a nurse or physician can use to make a patient feel more comfortable.

AccendoWave is a complimentary and voluntary service provided to patients during their hospital stay if they so choose to utilize the technology. The information gathered by AccendoWave is not a part of a patient’s medical record.

“AccendoWave Personal Comfort Companion is the latest in brain controlled discomfort management, and we are excited to bring the technology to Southern Hills,” said Martha Lawrence, CEO, AccendoWave.

Southern Hills Hospital is proud to partner with AccendoWave, as well as its collaborators AT &T and Samsung. Both corporations became involved with the project because this revolutionary brain controlled technology satisfaction platform had the potential to positively impact a patient’s hospital experience.

“AT &T is proud to support technology and innovative healthcare companies that encourage and empower patients to take control of their health and level of care. AccendoWave’s work with Southern Hills Hospital is a great example of how the Internet of Things can improve life through connectivity,” said Steve Burger, Area VP of Business Development & Connected Health, Internet of Things (IoT) Organization, AT &T.

The Samsung Tab 4 8.0 is being used to process patient brainwaves and provide diversionary content including games, music, video clips and full length movies. AccendoWave also utilizes Samsung KNOX to ensure clinical grade security.
