Parkview Health First to Activate New SMART® and FHIR® Technology Standards Through Healthwise

New FHIR Technology to bring innovative patient education and Engagement capabilities through modern, interoperable technologies

BOISE, Idaho, Oct. 18, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Parkview Health announced today that it will be one of the first in the country to leverage the new SMART® platform and HL7® FHIR® standard with Healthwise to implement a robust patient education and engagement program. Using the Healthwise® FHIR for Epic: Point of Care solution within the EpicCare® environment, Parkview will provide industry-proven education and engagement tools to improve communications between clinicians and patients to help people play an active role in managing their health.

Educating and engaging patients in their care has become front and center for many major health systems as health literacy shortfalls continue to drive up to 17% of the total cost of medical care in the country. Health literacy correlates with appropriate care utilization, medication compliance, care plan adherence, and readmissions—all of which affect the optimal delivery of care. The Healthwise FHIR solution can deliver relevant, patient-focused, interactive assets such as care instructions, post-discharge education, videos, and shared decision making tools to a patient portal or email address. The assets can also be delivered via print at the point of care. By leveraging technology through SMART and FHIR with Healthwise, Parkview will now be able to offer their patients a more robust set of content and tools proven to engage and educate for better outcomes.

“Healthwise has been an excellent partner in continuing our commitment to patient-centered, innovative care,” said Vicki Maisonneuve, Nursing Center of Excellence & Magnet Director at Parkview Health. “Our dedication to providing patients with high-quality care and a tailored, meaningful, and engaged care experience means offering them new ways to connect with their clinicians. Our use of the new SMART and FHIR standards with Healthwise is a significant step in meeting those aims.”

Adam Husney, MD, Healthwise’s President and Chief Medical Officer, agreed that healthcare consumers will benefit greatly from this partnership. “Leading health systems are increasingly focused on developing new ways to help patients stay healthy, get better, and live well with illness. Our partnership with Parkview enables clinicians to quickly and easily send trusted content—proactively and at the moment the patient will most benefit from getting it.”

Parkview Health and Healthwise are currently implementing the new solution and expect to be live in the next few months for rollout to their care environments.
