Odysseys with Carly Helfand

PM360 asked Carly Helfand, Associate Content Director, Phreesia, about the place she just can’t stop returning to.

Church of Our Lady before Týn in Old Town Square.

My Odyssey: I lived in Prague for two years a little over a decade ago, and the city has had a piece of my heart ever since. Between their narrow, winding cobblestone streets, soaring spires, enchanting gardens, hilltop castle, tucked away pubs, and hidden libraries, the city’s Old Town, Castle District, and Malá Strana neighborhoods have an air of magic about them. New Town—which, founded in the 14th century, is not actually all that new anymore—is no less charming, with its colorful pastel facades.

The Strahov Library.

My Recommendation: Spend a sunny afternoon at Letná Beer Garden in Letná Park or peddle boating on the Vltava River. Both activities will afford you some of the city’s best views and give you the chance to sample the local specialty, Pilsner Urquell, in the birthplace of beer as we know it. Give traditional Czech pub food a try at least once; Pivovar U Medvídků and Lokál are great places to do it and are both conveniently located in Old Town.

A view of the Vltava River from Letná Park.

My personal favorite spot, Pivnice U Sadu, is a little farther out in the Vinohrady neighborhood, but you’ll be rewarded with lively outdoor seating, a great beer selection and the best Nakládaný hermelín (marinated cheese) in town. If you have extra time in the Czech Republic, consider a day trip to Český Krumlov, a small town and UNESCO World Heritage site that looks like it’s been plucked straight from a fairytale.
