My Other Life with Jim Hunsicker

PM360 recently spoke to Jim Hunsicker, Director Strategic Planning & Alliance Management, CV/Metabolic at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, about finding an exercise routine that would stick.

Jim enjoyed finding an exercise routine with an interactive platform that aids in accountability, competitiveness, and offers variety.

PM360: What made you want to pick up exercise more during the pandemic?

Jim Hunsicker: After working in healthcare for almost two decades, I realized that the disease areas I often work around are ones with which I have a strong family history. For years, I would “try” different things, but I knew now was the time to make a commitment to a lifestyle change. For me, time was NOT the issue, it was prioritization. I went with the Peloton Bike+ because the interactive platform aids in accountability, competitiveness, and has a great deal of variety.

What is your typical exercise routine?

I normally aim for five to six days a week and I typically ride about 10 miles in the morning, before 6 a.m.

Do you have any favorite classes or instructors?

I have tried a good number of classes, which provide different experiences throughout the rides. The instructors who have eclectic music choices, a meaningful message, and create a fun atmosphere are ones I gravitate toward. Classes with music, holiday, or inspirational themes are some of my favorites. I also favor instructors who are more like motivational speakers than drill instructors! Plus, it’s fun to be a part of an exercise social media community with other health-conscious individuals.

How has your experience compared to other exercises you tried in the past?

Well, this is the FIRST one that I have stuck with for more than 30 days. I am on a 40-week streak, which is likely driven by the behavioral science the platform is designed around (Challenges, Streaks, Achievements, community, etc.) that hooked me in. Also, being able to create my own community and connecting with colleagues, friends, and family while exercising has helped drive my accountability during a time of isolation throughout the pandemic.

What progress have you made so far?

By averaging about 10 miles per day, I just exceeded about 2,000 miles for the year. And I reached 8,000 total minutes—which even surprised me! From a health perspective, I have more focus, energy, stress management, and balance which helps me perform in my fast-paced work environment. I still have a way to go but as they say, Rome was not built in a day.

Do you have any specific goals you are looking to reach?

I was “challenged” by a colleague to “keep up” in 2021, and I blew that out of the water. In 2022, I would like to get to 10,000 minutes and maybe 3,000 miles—which is just about 250 miles further than the distance from my home in Connecticut to Los Angeles. I would say riding across the U.S. in one year, while maintaining a busy career will be an accomplishment. Ultimately, my goal is to improve my overall health and this exercise regimen is a good habit to help jump start that journey.
