Advocacy for Better Communities
Eugene Green has spent more than 20 years providing food, water, and support for the homeless population in Philadelphia. Recently, he’s added “public health advocate” to his efforts. Eugene expects nothing in return for his philanthropy. The occasional thank you—or a smile—bring him joy.
Eugene’s curiosity about the diversity in his community sparked at an early age, when he noticed people living in different circumstances than himself. At any given time, between 700-800 people in Philadelphia are experiencing homelessness. When his father suggested they bring food to unhoused people near the Philadelphia Convention Center, Eugene found a great purpose for his life. From the age of 12, each year on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Eugene fed the homeless in his community.
Over the years, these annual trips multiplied to more frequent monthly excursions to deliver food, water, and clothing to the homeless population. As an adult, Eugene’s deliveries began to include cookies purchased from his goddaughter Shelby, a proud Girl Scout. Delivering each with personal notes marked “Love, Shelby,” Eugene also passed along his love for service, by including his goddaughter.
The global pandemic’s impact on Black and Brown communities strengthened Eugene’s passion for public health, inspiring his advocacy efforts in a video series, “Healthy With an Attitude.” Each episode features prominent healthcare providers and raises awareness of chronic conditions, to help support healthier lifestyles. Filled with discussions promoting wellness in communities, these videos have gained an engaged audience and a continually growing viewership. Eugene plans to take his philanthropic efforts to new heights by expanding his video series into a podcast, coordinating a Juneteenth fundraiser for a local homeless shelter, and through a developing partnership with the Philadelphia Housing & Urban Dev Department (HUD) office.
When asked about Eugene, Ashley Cardarelli, Vice President of Strategic Accounts at Sharecare shared, “Eugene inspires our team to think about the greater implications of public health awareness. Whether through volunteering or advocating for those in need, Eugene is one-of-a-kind in his dedication to the lives of others, a true inspiration, and a Philanthropic Hero.”
