Drilling Down into the Needs of Patients

Both as a clinical psychologist working with individual patients, and as a technology executive designing the digital patient experience for millions of people, Hilary Hatch, PhD, is singularly focused on uncovering and understanding what matters most to patients.

As the leader of Phreesia’s clinical team, Hilary’s vision is centered on transforming how the healthcare industry supports patients in taking a more active role in their care. She and her team have partnered with numerous nonprofit organizations and academic institutions on innovative uses of Phreesia’s survey data to promote public good. For example, in June 2021, she was published as a co-author in the New England Journal of Medicine alongside experts from the Commonwealth Fund and the City University of New York Graduate School of Public Health & Health Policy for their research insights on COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. Hilary also co-authored a series of real-time reports with researchers from Harvard and the Commonwealth Fund on outpatient visit volume and telehealth use during COVID that informed policy.

Hilary’s team spearheads Phreesia’s development of best practices and evidence-based content that drive patients to seek preventive care and make healthier choices. Since Phreesia’s acquisition of Insignia Health, Hilary has led the charge to implement its Patient Activation Measure (PAM) across Phreesia as well as within CMS clinical-quality programs. PAM assesses an individual’s knowledge, skills, and confidence integral to managing one’s own health and healthcare. Through her team’s innovative use of tools like PAM, both payers and providers can better gauge a patient’s ability to manage their healthcare and therefore deploy care management and other interventions in a more efficient manner to patients who need support and will see the most benefit. The National Quality Forum (NQF) endorsed a performance measure based on PAM, and it is currently being used as a quality measure in multiple Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) models.

Previously, Hilary was an Instructor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins, and she currently serves on the faculty of the Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY), an affiliate of NYU Grossman School of Medicine.
