Josh John

Associate Director, Customer Engagement Strategy

Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Leading the VR Charge

At only 31 years of age, Josh John has already accumulated a career’s worth of experience, having spent over 10 years at Boehringer Ingelheim working across a range of departments including Global Sourcing, Speaker Bureau Operations, and Peer to Peer Marketing. He also completed short-term rotations in Market Research, Established Brands Marketing, and Respiratory Marketing. He has unequivocally dedicated his career at an early age to his company and the life sciences industry.

Currently in Customer Engagement Strategy, Josh has worked across BI’s entire global portfolio of products, leading the company’s cross portfolio capability building across BI’s transformation of non-personal promotion. As a young, ambitious, entrepreneurially oriented leader operating within a large global organization, he appreciates the challenges and the opportunity to be an agent of innovation. Despite internal roadblocks, Josh has successfully and admirably spearheaded the commercialization of disruptive engagement technologies and deployed a number of “firsts” at BI.

One example, in 2015 as VR was emerging as a novel and plausibly effective technology to deepen engagement and enhance storytelling, Josh lobbied his company to pilot a VR initiative. His program was wildly successful out of the gate and he then pushed to expand scope by converting the VR asset into a VR Detail that could be leveraged by nearly 1,000 field reps using Google Cardboard, making his company the industry’s very first to harness VR for the field rep channel, thereby distinguishing and differentiating themselves.

Currently, Josh is personally overseeing a range of new VR initiatives at BI, expanding from VR to mixed media, and driving measurably improved engagement with his customers and unprecedented results across both conference and rep channels. Given his successes and the momentum he’s created, the rest of the industry has fallen in line and is adopting immersive multimedia across channels—at an unmatched pace.

Josh has already earned the attention of senior leadership at BI, having been recognized with numerous awards, and he recently completed BI’s leadership development program, called Acceleration.
