Upstage Lung Cancer!

With music and theater, this nonprofit group is fighting the nation’s No. 1 cancer killer.

Upstage Lung Cancer, a not-for-profit patient advocacy organization dedicated to changing the course of lung cancer, recently held a musical theater fund-raising event at a well-known Boston theater. The show, Life Is a Cabaret, starred four top musical entertainers, Joyce Kulhawik, who is a premiere Boston arts and entertainment editor, and the President of Red Sox Nation and a recent lung cancer survivor, Jerry Remy, also the recipient of the first ULC Fan Award given for his courage in speaking out about his lung cancer.

In 2008, Upstage Lung Cancer (ULC) was founded by Hildy Grossman, a lung cancer survivor from Boston, Massachusetts. ULC is committed to supporting the fight against lung cancer through a strong mission focused on:

  • Increasing awareness of lung cancer as the No. 1 cancer killer of men and women
  • Destigmatizing the disease and the patients
  • Raising funds for basic research to enable earlier diagnosis and to discover more effective treatments

With an outstanding and dedicated Board of Directors and world-class Medical Advisory Board, including Thomas J. Lynch, Jr., MD, Director of Yale Cancer Center and Physician-in-Chief of the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, Upstage Lung Cancer has drawn attention to the prevalence and lethality of this No. 1 cancer killer.

Music and musical theater are the innovative means ULC uses to accomplish its goals. Music is about life, vitality, and joy, and singing uses the lungs to produce the wonderful sounds. Music and entertainment are also of great interest to the public. To date, ULC has held two private house parties as fund raisers, one in fall 2008 and one last spring. Each event accomplished the goals of raising funds and public awareness—with a program of cabaret and jazz music, a guest physician who informed the guests about lung cancer, and a reception. More musical events are planned and major sponsors are being sought. In addition to individual sponsors, the Boston Red Sox are sponsors.
